What should UAE residents know about Dammam before they go?
Dammam is the capital of Saudi Arabia's Eastern Province, a Gulf port city that runs into Al Khobar and Dhahran as one metropolitan area. From the UAE you can reach it by coach: you board at our Dubai, Sharjah or Abu Dhabi office, and the coach, operated with our Saudi partner SAT, arrives at the SAT station in Dammam.
This guide covers the part after the bus: where you arrive, how the three cities fit together, what is worth seeing, and the basics of money, phones and getting around. For the journey itself, read our step-by-step Dubai to Dammam by bus guide.
Where does the coach from the UAE arrive in Dammam?
Our coaches from the UAE arrive at the SAT station in Dammam, the terminal of our Saudi partner SAT. Your e-ticket shows the arrival point, so save it on your phone, together with the address you are heading to, before you leave the UAE.
When the coach pulls in, collect your hold luggage and check you have everything before you leave the station. Most travellers continue by taxi or a ride-hailing app. If someone is meeting you, send them the live tracking link from your e-ticket before you set off, so they can follow the coach on the map and reach the station when you do.
How do Dammam, Al Khobar and Dhahran fit together?
Think of them as one coastal city with three distinct parts. Dammam is the provincial capital and the port. Al Khobar, along the coast to the south, is where many visitors head for the waterfront, shopping and restaurants. Dhahran sits between the two and is home to Saudi Aramco and to Ithra, the King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture.
Taxis and ride-hailing apps cover all three, so you do not need a car for a short stay. When someone gives you an address, check which of the three cities it is in before you book a ride; it saves a lot of back-and-forth with drivers.
What is there to see and do in Dammam?
Most visitors start on the water. The Dammam Corniche is a long seafront promenade with parks, play areas and space to walk, and it is at its liveliest in the evening, when families come out for the sea breeze. The Al Khobar Corniche, to the south, has a similar mix of paths, cafés and sea views.
For culture, Ithra in Dhahran brings a museum, a library, a theatre and a cinema together in one landmark building; check its programme before you go. Further south, the beaches around Half Moon Bay are a popular weekend escape. And on the road from the UAE you pass Al Hofuf, the main city of the Al-Ahsa Oasis, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2018 and is worth a separate visit if you have time in the Eastern Province.
Can you visit Bahrain from Dammam over the King Fahd Causeway?
Yes. The King Fahd Causeway links the Al Khobar area with Bahrain through a chain of bridges and embankments across the sea, and it has carried traffic between the two countries since 1986. Bahrain is an island, and the causeway is its road link with Saudi Arabia, which is also how the SAT coach from Dammam to Manama reaches Bahrain.
Crossing means leaving Saudi Arabia and entering Bahrain, with passport control and customs for both countries on the causeway. Bahrain sets its own entry rules: GCC citizens normally enter with their national ID card or passport, while residents of GCC countries should check their eligibility on Bahrain's official eVisa portal before they travel. Our UAE to Bahrain by bus guide covers the whole route.
What should you carry when you arrive in Dammam?
Keep your passport and your Saudi entry document within reach: a valid Saudi visa or Saudi iqama, or your national ID card if you are a GCC citizen. If you live in the UAE, carry your Emirates ID as well, because you will need it to come back. Add your e-ticket, a charged phone and a power bank.
On our Saudi coaches each passenger travels with 40 kg of luggage, as two bags of 20 kg, plus a hand bag. Keep medication and its prescription, valuables, water and a light layer for the air-conditioning in your hand bag. Pack the hold bags neatly, because customs may inspect them at the border, and never carry a bag or parcel for anyone else.
Money, SIM cards and getting around Dammam
Saudi Arabia uses the Saudi riyal (SAR). Cards are widely accepted in malls, restaurants and larger shops in Dammam and Al Khobar, but carry some cash for small purchases and taxis that may not take cards. Bank ATMs are the simplest way to get riyals once you arrive.
For data, you can switch on roaming on your UAE line or buy a Saudi SIM from a licensed telecom shop. Saudi mobile lines are registered to the user, so take your passport, and expect the shop to verify your identity, which can include your fingerprints. Sort out your connection before you need a map or a ride.
Taxis and ride-hailing apps are the easiest way to get around Dammam, Al Khobar and Dhahran. Save your addresses in both Arabic and English if you can, and if you are travelling alone, share your live location with family.
When is the best time of year to visit Dammam?
The cooler months, from late autumn to early spring, are the most comfortable time to visit, especially if you plan evenings on the Corniche or a day at the beach. Summers in the Eastern Province are very hot and humid, so plan indoor visits for the daytime and keep outdoor plans for after sunset.
Coach trips run subject to border and authority schedules, which can change around public holidays, so check availability for your date before you fix your plans. Online booking opens a limited number of days ahead; if your date is not showing yet, message us on WhatsApp and our team will advise you.
Can you travel on to Makkah for Umrah with us from Dammam?
Not as an individual seat. We do not sell Umrah trips to individual travellers. For Umrah we offer whole-coach hire to organised groups: the group arranges its own Umrah, and we provide the whole coach with a driver, with the pickup point agreed when the group books.
If you are organising a group, send us your plan through our group coach hire page and our team will come back to you with the options for your dates.
